Mental Health Resources in Central and Downtown Las Vegas
Downtown is where Las Vegas started, and it's still where much of the valley's mental health care lives. The Medical District, the state mental health campus on West Charleston, and many of the city's low-cost clinics sit within a few miles of Fremont Street. This guide gathers the places worth knowing, from crisis care to counseling, psychiatry, and support groups, so you spend less time searching and more time getting help.

About Legal 2000 holds. In Nevada, a doctor, psychologist, or police officer can place someone on an emergency psychiatric hold, called a Legal 2000, when they believe the person is a danger to themselves or others. The hold allows up to 72 hours for evaluation. If this happens to someone you love, ask the hospital for the name of the treating doctor and a number to call for updates.
Mental Health in Central Las Vegas
Central Las Vegas holds some of the valley's oldest neighborhoods, from the brick homes of Huntridge and John S. Park to the Scotch 80s and the Arts District. Longtime residents, downtown workers, casino and hospitality staff, and many Spanish-speaking families call this part of town home. So do many of our unhoused neighbors.

Three kinds of care, three different jobs. Here's how to tell which one fits.
Therapy and Counseling
Talk therapy with a licensed therapist, such as an LCSW, LMFT, or LCPC. Good for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship stress, and burnout. Most people meet weekly, in person or by telehealth.
Psychiatry and Medication Management
A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner diagnoses conditions and prescribes medication, then meets with you every few weeks or months to adjust it. Many people in Las Vegas see a therapist and a psychiatric provider at the same time.
Psychological Evaluations and Testing
A psychologist gives structured tests to answer a specific question, like ADHD, autism, a learning difference, or memory changes. Testing takes a few hours spread across one or more visits, and ends with a written report and recommendations.

Getting There by Bus
Many of the places on this page sit on or near a bus line. Every RTC route in the valley connects at the Bonneville Transit Center downtown, at 101 E Bonneville Ave. Buses along Charleston Boulevard reach UMC and the state mental health campus at 6171 W Charleston. The Maryland Parkway rapid bus runs past The LGBTQ+ Center and Desert Parkway hospital.

Bridge Counseling offers a sliding scale, UNLV The Practice offers affordable sessions with supervised clinicians, and the state's adult and child clinics set fees based on income.
What's the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?
A therapist helps through talk therapy. A psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner diagnoses conditions and manages medication. Many people see both.
